Post-tonsillectomy bleed scenario
triage nurse asks you to examine 23yo Josie who she is worried about
3 days post tonsillectomy - today has spat out large volume of blood
- Moves patient to appropriate clinical area
- Airway assessment - recognises and manages potential risk to airway
- patient positioning
- Gains IV access and requests appropriate blood tests including G+S and cross-match
- Escalates to specialty appropriately - ENT
- Checks for bleeding point → appropriate treatment: adrenaline-soaked gauze
- Responds promptly to change in clinical situation
