- introduce self
- check patient's level of familiarity
- ensure no current pain/SOB to be addressed
- explain indications for peak flow measurement
- position patient appropriately
- Ensure the peak flow meter is set to zero
- Ask the patient to take the deepest breath they are able to
- Instruct the patient to hold the peak flow meter horizontally, ensuring it remains level, and to place their mouth fully around the mouthpiece to form a tight seal with their lips
- Ask the patient to exhale forcefully into the mouthpiece (“blow out as hard as you can”)
- Note the reading on the peak flow meter, which is measured in litres per minute
- Repeat steps 8-13 twice more
- Record the highest reading of the three attempts as the final result
- After explaining and demonstrating PEFR measurement, observe the patient carrying out the procedure; provide feedback to refine the patient's technique
