  • introduce self
  • check patient's level of familiarity
  • ensure no current pain/SOB to be addressed
  • explain indications for peak flow measurement
  • position patient appropriately
  • Ensure the peak flow meter is set to zero
  • Ask the patient to take the deepest breath they are able to
  • Instruct the patient to hold the peak flow meter horizontally, ensuring it remains level, and to place their mouth fully around the mouthpiece to form a tight seal with their lips
  • Ask the patient to exhale forcefully into the mouthpiece (“blow out as hard as you can”)
  • Note the reading on the peak flow meter, which is measured in litres per minute
  • Repeat steps 8-13 twice more
  • Record the highest reading of the three attempts as the final result
  • After explaining and demonstrating PEFR measurement, observe the patient carrying out the procedure; provide feedback to refine the patient's technique
