  • Explain indications for IO insertion
  • Explain contra-indications for IO insertion
    • infection over site, fracture at site, used for IO access in last 48h
    • Osteogenesis imperfecta
  • Palpates Landmarks correctly
    • proximal tibia
    • distal femur, proximal tibia
    • humeral head
  • preparation of equipment:
    • right needle size -
      • red = 15mm
      • blue = 25mm → this should be ok for average sized adult prox tibia
      • yellow = 45mm → this should be ok for average sized adult prox humerus
    • skin prep
    • IO dressing
    • extension and flush (prime with 2% lidocaine if conscious?)
    • wristband
  • safe insertion of IO
  • awareness that blood taken can be sent to lab for analysis
  • hard flush +/- local anaesthetic if patient is conscious
  • documents accurately
  • removal after IV access gained- up to 72h
