essentially stops the kidneys from popping if the BP shoots up
occurs within seconds
vascular stretch → ↑ movement of Ca ions from ECF intracellularly
prevents excess stretch of vessel wall
↑ vascular resistance → prevents excess ↑ in renal blood flow when arterial pressure rises
