Glycolic acid is cleared by the kidney and is largely responsible for the marked acidosis seen in severe cases

- Metab acidosis
- initially high osmolar gap → osmolar gap ↓ while anion gap ↑
- Falsely high lactate (cross reactivity with toxic alcohols)
- ↑ RR
