Tetanus prophylaxis

no further treatment required

  • age >11, with adequate priming course of tetanus vaccine and last dose within 10 years
  • age 5-10 with priming course and preschool booster
  • age <5 with priming course

give immediate reinforcing dose

  • adequate priming course, but last dose >10 years OR
  • age 5-10 with priming course but no booster AND
  • tetanus-prone wounds

OR

  • Not received adequate priming course of tetanus vaccine, or uncertain immunisation status, and/or born before 1961 AND
  • clean wound^

immediate reinforcing dose AND immunoglobulin

  • adequate priming course, but last dose >10 years OR

  • age 5-10 with priming course but no booster AND

  • high risk wound

  • Not received adequate priming course of tetanus vaccine, or uncertain immunisation status, and/or born before 1961 AND

  • tetanus prone wound, OR

  • high risk wound
