transcutaneous pacing

demand vs non-demand - v useful !

Reverse causes - not a sick person who is bradycardic, but a patient who is sick because of the rhythm

  • Chooses sedation/appropriate analgesia
  • Attaches pads
  • Attaches 3 lead ECG
  • warns patient if conscious
  • Chooses demand pacing
  • Chooses pace
  • Chooses appropriate starting current
  • Checks to see every pacing spike is followed by a QRS complex
  • increases energy incrementally until electrical + mechanical capture achieved (i.e. ensure radial/femoral pulse matches complexes on monitor)
  • Hands over appropriately
