Vaccine-preventable illness, usually mild
Etiology RNA paramyxovirus
Epidemiology Droplet spread.
infective 7 days before and 9 days after parotid swelling starts
incubation period = 14-21 days
Symptoms: - malaise, muscular pain
- parotitis ('earache', 'pain on eating'): unilateral initially then becomes bilateral in 70%
Signs:
Investigations: NAAT, culture, or serology
Management: natural infection → lifelong immunity
school exclusion: 5 days following parotitis
Complications parotitis, orchitis, meningitis
Prevention MMR vaccine is effective
