Etiology Orthopoxvirus. Clade II responsible for worldwide outbreak (previously found in West Africa).
Epidemiology Endemic to DRC, but UK outbreak in 2022. Transmission: zoonotic, or human-human via contact, respiratory secretions
Clinical presentation Prodrome (1-4 days before rash): flu-like symptoms
Rash: blisters on genitals, hands, feet, chest, face or mouth, lasting 2-4 weeks
Complications: Pneumonia, encephalitis, keratitis/corneal ulceration
Pathogenesis
Diagnostic investigations PCR from skin lesion
Management Inpatients will need negative pressure isolation
Isolate until last skin lesion heals
Supportive
Notifiable disease.
Prevention Vaccine available for high-risk people.
