peri-tonsillar abscess. often mentioned in passing as a ddx for sore throat without much detail...
Etiology
Epidemiology
Clinical presentation unilateral tonsillar swelling with uvular deviation

Ddx: Retropharyngeal abscess - neck pain/held in extension/torticollis; bulge in posterior oropharynx
Diagnostic investigations
Management Resuscitation:

airway doom from infections, abscesses etc.

  • Escalate and ask for help early
  • Where is the place of safety? → resus, theatres?
  • Sit patient up, keep calm
  • IV Dexamethasone? Adrenaline neb?


Stable patient:
Conservative - abx, or surgical - I+D
