- Exits skull at jugular foramen
- Runs in carotid sheath between common carotid and IJV
- Runs anterior to subclavian artery in the root of the neck
- Runs posterior to lung root
- Exits diaphragm at T10

- most abdominal viscera
- parasympathetic supply to
- exocrine pancreas
- stomach
- lung
- motor supply to
- palatoglossus (Innervation of tongue)
important branches
classic clinical sign of injury
- uvula deviating away from site of lesion
- loss of gag reflex (efferent) (see Cranial nerve reflexes)
- loss of jaw jerk reflex
