exits skull at hypoglossal canal (medial to jugular foramen) with ascending pharyngeal artery
important supply
intrinsic tongue muscles apart from palatoglossus (which is supplied by Vagus nerve)

mechanism
- penetrating neck injury
- classically, after carotid endarterectomy
clinical presentation
tongue deviation to side of lesion
