Sciatic nerve
| Headline | derived from lumbosacral plexus |
|---|---|
| Roots | L4-S3 |
| Motor supply | posterior thigh adductor magnus (hamstring portion) leg and foot |
| Sensory supply | skin on lateral leg and foot, heel, dorsum and soleo f foot |
course
- Forms on the surface of piriformis
- enters gluteal region via greater sciatic foramen (inferior to piriformis)
- runs in posterior compartment of thigh
- crossed by long head of biceps femoris
- terminates at apex of popliteal fossa
injury patterns
Motor loss:
- Weak extension of hip and flexion of knee
- loss of dorsiflexion and plantarflexion of ankle
- loss of inversion and eversion of foot
- foot drop with high-stepping gait
mechanism
- posterior dislocation/acetabular fracture (which itself implies high energy mech)
